Are the Excelsior or Visitacion Valley areas in San
Francisco safe? It seems to be common knowledge that Bayview and Hunter's Point are the scary parts of San Fransisco - but what about Excelsior or Visitacion Valley? They're nearby, and have a comparable real estate market - is this because they're not safe either?We're looking to buy a house in one of those areas, but we want to make sure we buy somewhere safe.
The Excelsior seems much safer than Vis Valley. I used to live there and never had any problems walking the dog alone in the evenings. The neighborhood is mostly working class families/ homeowners with very friendly business owners. It has a nice community feel to me- I teach there so I know many families. However, there are scattered corners throughout the neighborhood where you'll see flowers memorializing a shooting victim and occasionally hear gunshots in the distance- over the hill- probably in vis valley. The neighborhood has improved and cleaned up considerably over the past 10 years or so & Mc Claren park is BEAUtifil!!! and certainly safe by day!
No Way!the Excelsior district is not safe, many gangs and gang-members.. lots of trouble. and if you area planing on living in Vis. Valley, forget about it. If you are white, and going to live in Vis Valley, ha, NOT recommended. More gangs and gang members than excelsio, also really close the bayview and hunter's point. If you want to stay safe but spend more, i recommend richmond, sunset, noe valley, marina, north beach, glen park.
